DELIVERING SOCIAL VALUE THROUGH PUBLIC SERVICES PROCUREMENT AND COMMISSIONING

eGov Monitor Round Tables

Boilerhouse Media will partner eGov Monitor and the Transition Institute in presenting a series of three, webcast, roundtables during Spring 2012. These will explore key issues and challenges around the commissioning of services and establishing new models of delivery that incorporate social value by the public sector.  Register for NewsLetter

Boilerhouse will provide the branding; design, build and host a dedicated website for the series; promote the events through social media, the web and other digital comms; provide the webcasting at each of the three events and capture & disseminate the event content through web-video, audio and print channels.

The Transition Institute is an independent centre for research and collaboration, founded by NESTA and Social Enterprise London, designed to support people and organisations forming new models of public service delivery that maximise social value and innovation. This includes the creation of social enterprises and community interest companies, and the integration of social value within public service delivery through more traditional means.

The architecture of public services in the UK is in transition. This presents an unrivalled opportunity to transform public services for the better. The Transition Institute supports a network of organisations and individuals at the cutting edge of forming new and exceptional public services that deliver real social value.

eGov Monitor- the information daily for senior policy and decision makers from the public as well as the private sector and other key influencers – offers a daily online package of essential reading to senior policy and decision makers; a daily news alert service designed to provide senior managers with insight and analysis of the key issues of the day. A weekly digest is also available for subscribers. eGov Monitor also offers a suit of on & offline events which aim to further the discourse among senior policy makers and key influencers as well as bridge the gap between private and public sector.

BOILERHOUSE VOICES! DYSTOPIAN NIGHTS?

Award winning author Jim Crace © Andrew Bainbridge

From time to time Boilerhouse Media invites contemporary thinkers to share their ideas with an invited audience (sustained with food and drink) at a venue of note. Past events in the Boilerhouse Voices series have seen triple BAFTA winning, BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson talking at the Hook Norton Brewery on whether war in Iraq and Afghanistan had made the world “A Safer Place” and twice Oscar nominated film director Mike Figgis (TimeCode, Leaving Las Vegas) talking to an audience at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham unpicking the idea of “Morality in Hollywood”

We are delighted to announce that eGov Monitor will sponsor the multi-award winning writer Jim Crace as the next speaker at Boilerhouse Voices. Jim Crace has twice won the Whitbread Award and been shortlisted once for the Whitbread and the Booker prizes. He was awarded the Guardian Fiction Prize and the David Highham Prize for Fiction. In the USA he has been awarded National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award, the American Academy of Arts & Letters E.M Forster Award. Jim Crace will be speaking to our guests in the Atrium at The Studio in central Birmingham on 26th April 2012 The title of his address will be “Can Things Only Get Worse”

A LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE

For the sixth year running Boilerhouse has delivered a wide range of communications activity for BP Shipping. This year we have produced ten issues of The Flag, which has moved away from print and into digital. We have designed and produced an interactive dashboard for their Meritocracy, Diversity and Inclusion programme, and a suite of communications materials for the ‘AllTogetherNow’ events (designed by Boilerhouse in Birmingham and delivered in UK, Chicago and Singapore). We have provided a range of graphics for internal communications and to round-off the year we have produced an animated Christmas e-Card now braving the waves around the world.

Boilerhouse Media is a leader and innovator in the field of online digital tools. Boilerhouse WebTools® can be designed to attract and engage existing stakeholders and potential customers in an interactive relationship with the organisation. Boilerhouse WebTools® are recognised as setting a benchmark for accessibility, usability and usefulness turning company websites from cost to profit centres while improving efficiency, productivity, or profitability.

The Readiness Assessment Tool that Boilerhouse developed as part of a new website for their client Ctrl Shift allows stakeholders and potential clients to test their readiness for the predicted changes in the social dynamics and legislative framework governing the exchange of personal data.

Where clients, customers, stakeholders, staff, departments, branches or organisations are striving to achieve agreed and pre-defined goals this tool allows them to self-assess their readiness and compare their progress to others in the group. The user ticks boxes against a series of answers and the tool processes the answers giving an individual report on the user’s readiness or stage of development at the end of the process.

WEB VIDEO – MAKING RESEARCH USEFUL

There is no better way of making research findings useful than videoing the findings as you get them. The Boilerhouse Conference Capture package, which can include video for web, can have the results of your vox pop survey on your website before the populi get home. 27th September found the Boilerhouse Film Unit at the Biomedical Science Congress staged at the ICC Birmingham along with a team from Research By Design. (Ruth Bolle, associate Director at Research by Design left) who had called us in as part of a wider research project for the Institute of Biomedical Science. The Boilerhouse contribution included a short web video that will be used to promote the event and a number of video vox pop interviews with Congress delegates.

SOCIAL MEDIA – TWEETSTORM PUTS BUMS ON SEATS

Throughout August 2011, for the duration of the Edinburgh Festival, Boilerhouse mounted a twitter campaign designed to get people to go to see 88MPH a comedy show presented by Birmingham based theatre group Rogue Lounge at the Edinburgh Fringe. We wanted to see if we could mount a Twitter campaign that would have an immediate and measurable effect on audience numbers. The results (partly hard data and partly anecdotal) prove, at least to our satisfaction, that Tweeting can be a highly effective tool for promoting a (time limited) festival and a particular event within a festival.

Perhaps not surprisingly, as we sat and watched the #edfringe stream for a couple of hours each evening (5-7pm), we could “see” people making choices (whether to go to Edinburgh, when to go, how to travel, what shows to see, where to eat) based on information they were clearly getting from their own social media accounts. It was clear that information they had received from their own Twitter and Facebook contacts was pushing their consumer decisions and that these decisions – re-broadcast through the #edfringe hashtag – were having a knock-on effect on other punter’s decisions.

The number of #edfringe tweets per minute built up each evening (as people got home from work?) to a rate that Twitter’s server often became overloaded and the “Too Many Tweets” message appeared. The Boilerhouse TweetTeam named this daily phenomenon the TweetStorm. Despite the awful weather and the even worse economic situation Edinburgh ticket sales were up 3% this year. It is difficult to believe that the TweetStorm didn’t have something to do with this.

We only added our efforts to the TweetStorm on half of the 23 evenings that Rogue Lounge were performing. And, remarkably, on those evenings when we were “pushing” our messages, attendance at 88MPH was up by more than 50%. What did we do to achieve this? Well we can at least confirm that we now know that what you say, who you say it to and when you say it are all significant factors. The same is true, of course, for all successful promotional communications.
